You’ve told us that you want information about how to ask for permission to adapt your home to be easily available. You also said you wanted to know what surveyors look for when we receive a permission request and what factors are considered when we make a decision.

How to make a permission request

If you’re living in a retirement leasehold property, permission requests are directed to our dedicated Leasehold Surveyor Colin Green. He’ll check your lease and let you know our decision.

If you’re any other homeowner, including shared ownership, the Area Repairs Surveyor will make a decision and communicate this to you.

Generally, you can carry out minor works, such as putting up shelves or decorating, without our permission.

If you plan to carry out major works such as taking down or putting up a wall, or building an extension, you may require our written permission and you should contact us before proceeding with improvements of that nature.

You’ll also need to ensure that any major works that we’ve approved are carried out by a reputable builder and meet all necessary building regulations and local authority planning requirements.

Any works that change the gas or electrical fittings must be certified that the changes comply with current regulations and certification must be provided once the works are complete.

If you carry out improvement works without our permission, you may find that you cannot sell your property.
